Montana Salmon Fly Tour Revisited - June 2006

Early summer of 2006 brings us back to West Yellowstone, Montana for another search for the Western Salmon Fly and the fat trout that enjoy these tasty morsels.  This was the third time we flew into Montana in late June trying to hit the mother of all hatches as well as catch some of the early mayfly and caddis hatches in Yellowstone National Park.  The crew at Blue Ribbon Flies are waiting, our bags are packed, fly boxes full of large orange creatures, strong, new leaders all attached and away we go . . .

Let's start out with a chunky Madison River brown trout.  We picked this guy up using an 8' 6 weight BHT Bamboo rod patterned after the Dickerson 8014 taper.  A strong rod that easily handles big flies, big fish and almost all the breeze Montana can offer.

Marjorie on the Gallatin.  The rumor was that the big bugs were working their way up the canyon, so we thought we would cut them off at the pass.  They were indeed out and about, but that did not prevent our poster girl from sticking one of her favorite rubber lipped game fish.

Your humble rodmaker once again trying to make the pages of a world famous catalog.  It's obvious that it will take a lot more trout to overcome that somewhat frightening pose offered by a not so photogenic angler.  You can't say the same about the scenery.  In the background you can see we are approaching the Palisades section of the Madison River.  A really unique and impressive view looking up from the river.  It must have been quite a sight to see the buffalo dropping over the rim as the local Indians await their winter food and clothing re-supply.

Geoff gets another hug! Be sure to check out that big fuzzy Sunken Stone firmly attached to the lips of that unfortunate Madison River brown trout

What can I say?

When you're not fishing, it is images like this that keep bringing me back to Montana.
